although sd is a great band.. they do not meet two requiremments which i believe voters llok for.. one longevity yes 20 some odd years and 1 record every 5? and of course trend setting.. there were a few other influential la bands that i beleive deserve a shot before sd such as X and maybe even the weirdos who were way ahead of their time..

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial">I agree there are other bands that should be before SD, but X? Those are some strong words. I like X but I dont think they should be in there at all. I guess everyone has their own opinion.

    hhhhhmmmmm....

When I was working at VH1 this past summer I pitched an idea for a show similar to Behind the Music called "Cult Classic" that would give a brief history of bands that have survived for a long time in the "underground" and have had an influential effect on today's popular music. Social D was one of the three episdoes I wrote. The people in Program Development loved it, but said the higher ups would never buy it b/c it wasn't "celebrity oriented" enough. I'm thinking about taking it to MTV2. They might bite, who knows.[/QB]
I think that is an awesome idea. You could show the correlation between bands today and earlier bands that influenced them. A lot of kids today don't know that much about these early bands that paved the way. I like the idea of bands that have survived and still have a fan base.

Look at Social D fans. We are a bunch of freaks, but we are a very LOYAL bunch of freaks!

X - was by far the most original sounding punk band of the late 70s.. they were in the forefront.. which their style was somewhat copied by bands like sd.. im sorry but when you think of the three prominant punk scenes of the 70s the uk is represented by the pistols and to some degree the clash ny the ramones and even though i do not like them the talking heads.. and la has to be X with maybe a group like the germs following.. sd is a great band but somewhat similar to many of the other early oc/la bands ie the adolescents, f-word, etc. they happened to continue to push on thus evolving.. but not into hall of fame material at least in my opinion..

by the way there is a recently new group called the 12 step rebels that are fabulous.. if you get a chance check them out..

There are many bands/performers that represent the same genre of music that are in the hall of fame. They have different categories like performers, non-performers, sidemen, early influences, life-time acheivement. They are just starting to look at the influences punk bands really had. I'm not saying Social D is the only early punk band that could be added to the list with the other few. I think they are one of the important ones though, in my opinion. As to which ones would ever make it in, everyone is going to have their favorites. Social D just happens to be one of mine. [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

The R&R Hall Of Fame & the Grammys are horse shit. Those idiots have no idea what is going on with music whatsoever. They are a promotional tool to sell more records. No indy or underground record ever wins. It's always a Billboard Top 100 title. I mean Norah Jones won best album of the year like 2 yrs ago. I'm sorry the album is interesting and she is talented but come on. You mean to tell me that during the whole year that was the best album all around. Give me a break. I've worked in record stores for a long time now. The day after the grammy it's always the same story. This year "Hey, do you have the Ray Charles disc. I saw it on the grammys last night, pretty good." And they then proceed to buy the entire Ray Charles catalog. Ray Charles has been in music for nearly 50 yrs if not longer - all of sudden people want to listen to him now. Where were they when he was alive putting out albums and no one gave a shit.

And the R&R Hall of Fame is even worse. It makes for good TV to see broken up bands re-unite for one night but have you ever noticed that those that artists inducted are usually coming off of a big commercially successful album or conveniently timed greatest hits/retrospective release. It's all marketing.

I love Social D. but they will never be recognized by either of those institutions. If you write good songs and are good musicians and have memorable melodies with catchy hooks but don't sell any records they don't care. Now Social D sells a good amount of records but not by industry standards.

I don't even bother watching MTV, VH1, Grammies, all that. I'd rather figure out what to listen to on my own than be brainwashed into liking something. As far as I'm concerned Social D should were it as a badge of honor that they are not associated with any of that.

Sorry, to rant but I'm completely disgusted by the state of music and the industry that sells it.

Nothing to do with the hall of fame but along the same thread title, a radio station here just changed their format to what's called shuffle..no longer a set playlist...radio sucks in chicago pretty much cept for college and even that's not great ...anyway it's kinda cool, heard Social Distortion, Ramones, Suicidal Tendencies, on a major radio station, here that is a huge thing..... only would listen to news radio pretty much ...still think radio bites... but hey.....it was a pleasant surprise for me... Now if they play something off of SL&RR instead of ignoring the album I will really have a heart attack.... but heck I would go happy....

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial">yea, i think it's part of a new trend going around the entire country. here in dc, the legendary alt rock station whfs got cancelled after being on air for 30 years, then came back to a new format and now they actually play good bands like social d, ramones, ect and no more nu metal crap. same thing is happening to krock in nyc.

standard radio needs to find ways to compete with XM and Sirius satellite radio. I think the ones that were mentioned so far are starting to figure that out before the rest of em are. I for one will never tune into standard FM radio again after i got the hook up for XM......Its just way to fucking incredible to let go now. Aside from occasionally tuning into Kevin and Bean on Kroq, it just doesnt come close to interesting radio with a diverse genre playlist like satellite does.
